Historical Agreement Signed

CMAI & FDCI join hands for Mutual Cooperation

Opens office in Mumbai

The morning of November 8 witnessed signing of the historical agreement between industry’s oldest Association, The Clothing Manufacturers’ Association of India and the youngest body of Fashion Industry, The Fashion Design Council of India.

Mr. Premal Udani, President, CMAI and Mrs. Rathi Vinay Jha, Director General, FDCI signed on the dotted line with a view to foster the development of the Indian fashion manufacturing Industry and promote the interests of the various stakeholders involved in the process.

With the aim of mutual cooperation between the two big giants on the Indian garment scene, FDCI has opened an office in the CMAI premises in Mumbai and the office would be functional from December 1, 2006. The working of the office would be overseen by FDCI Board members Krishna Mehta and Arjun Khanna.

Speaking on the occasion Mr. Premal Udani President CMAI said “There is great synergy between the two organizations and I am sure this agreement will prove mutually beneficial as together we hope to support the Fashion industry in their endeavours.

Since its inception, around 40 years ago, CMAI has been acting as a catalyst of change, collaborating with the Government in matters of policy that impact the future of the Apparel industry. Being the largest conglomerate of retailers and manufacturers, it serves as a single sourcing destination, thereby infusing efficiency to time and cost into the supply chain. Whereas FDCI is India’s apex fashion body, whose core aim is to take the fashion industry forward and is doing a tremendous job of looking after the cause of fashion fraternity.”

A seemingly jubilant Mrs. Rathi Vinay Jha, Director General, FDCI shared, “The joint initiatives taken by CMAI and FDCI would cover a variety of trade-market promotion and capacity building programs, workshops, seminars etc. CMAI’s strength in manufacturing and technical services would be of benefit to the fashion industry, while FDCI’s expertise would support specialized representation in fashion-related areas both in India and abroad. Mrs. Jha added, “ The FDCI has always been committed to promoting the interests of the Indian fashion industry. The announcements we have made today only reiterate this commitment. The CMAI is an industry body and I am sure this relation will be mutually beneficial.”

The FDCI had also organized a meeting of the Western India designer members and buyers to facilitate dialogue between them and FDCI. The meeting at which senior FDCI members were also present was aimed at sharing the view points and suggestions of both designers and buyers, reviewing the status of the industry and identifying a roadmap to take forward FDCI’s efforts of placing India on the global map of world fashion.
